This INIT will play a sound (I've stuck the "Northern Exposure" theme in there for now) while your machine boots. See, I go into work and start my Quadra 950…sometime around 10 minutes later (well, it seems like 10 minutes) my machine is ready to go. All I have to do is make sure this extension loads first, and while I'm watching all of the other INITs' icons go by, I can listen to a nice section of music.
If you want to change the sound that gets played (maybe I'll add a control panel interface in the future), just replace (via ResEdit, of course) the sound that's there. Also, make sure to adjust the 'sysz' resource accordingly so that the system will give the INIT enough memory to load the sound at startup time. If none of this makes sense to you, DON'T DO IT.
NOTES:
The only problem I've currently found is if the system loads the Finder before the sound finishes, then the System Heap will be a bit larger than it really needs to be. The sound is deallocated and the space if freed, but it will be free space in the system heap and not available for general use. Maybe some day I'll fix that little problem…
